Stablecoin off-ramps explained

A stablecoin off-ramp converts USDT, USDC or another stablecoin into ordinary currency and pays it into a bank account. For a business, it's the step that turns a stablecoin payment into money it can use, report and audit.

How an off-ramp works

  1. Quote. The provider quotes a rate for the amount being converted.
  2. Transfer. The stablecoins are sent to an address the provider controls.
  3. Screening. The provider checks where the stablecoins came from before accepting them.
  4. Conversion. The stablecoins are converted to fiat at the agreed rate.
  5. Payout. The fiat is paid to a bank account over a rail such as SEPA or SWIFT.

Off-ramp or payment gateway

A crypto payment gateway helps a merchant take stablecoins at checkout. An off-ramp is about what happens next: getting the value into a bank account. Some businesses need both; many only need the second. Our article on gateways and off-ramps compares them.

What to check before choosing a provider

  • Whose name is on the account. Funds arriving from an account in your own name are easier for your bank and auditor to place. See named IBAN accounts.
  • Regulation you can verify. Ask for the regulator, the status and the registration number, then look it up. See how to check ours on the compliance page.
  • When the rate is fixed. A rate locked before you send removes the risk of the price moving in transit.
  • The amount that arrives. Compare providers on what lands in your account. See what goes into the cost.
  • Currencies and rails. Check the provider pays out in the currencies you invoice in.

Timing

The stablecoin transfer takes minutes. The fiat leg follows the bank rail, its cut-offs and banking days. Processing times depend on currency, jurisdiction and bank rails used. Our article on weekend off-ramping and cut-offs goes through each rail.

What a provider will ask for

Expect business verification at onboarding and, for larger payments, evidence of where the stablecoins came from. Our guide to source of funds for stablecoin payments explains what that means.

FAQ

Common questions

What is a stablecoin off-ramp?
A service that converts stablecoins such as USDT or USDC into fiat currency and pays it into a bank account.
Is an off-ramp the same as a crypto exchange?
No. An exchange matches buyers and sellers and usually leaves the money on the exchange. An off-ramp is built to deliver fiat to a bank account, with the compliance checks a bank expects.
Does my business need a crypto wallet?
Not necessarily. The payer can send stablecoins to an address the provider gives you, so your business only ever receives fiat.
What is an on-ramp?
The reverse: fiat in, stablecoins out. Many off-ramp providers, Sentvia included, do both.
