# Crypto Payment Gateway vs Stablecoin Off-Ramp: Which Do You Need?

Two products that sound alike and solve different problems. A gateway takes many small checkout payments; an off-ramp converts large sums into fiat in your own account

A crypto payment gateway is built for checkout: many small payments, plugins for your shop, automatic conversion, one settlement batch. A stablecoin off-ramp is built for settlement: large sums converted at an agreed quote and paid to a bank account in your company's own name. If your problem is "customers want to pay at checkout", you want a gateway. If your problem is "we hold or receive six or seven figures in stablecoins and need clean fiat", you want an off-ramp.

## Side by side

- **Typical payment size:** gateway: tens to hundreds of dollars per transaction. Off-ramp: $10,000 USD to millions per conversion.
- **Pricing model:** gateway: a published percentage per transaction. Off-ramp: a quote agreed per conversion, where execution quality at size is the real price.
- **Integration:** gateway: checkout plugins and APIs. Off-ramp: an account relationship, deposit addresses and named bank accounts; often no code at all.
- **Compliance depth:** gateway: standardised, sized for consumer payments. Off-ramp: transaction-level screening and source-of-funds work, sized for amounts a bank will ask about.
- **Settlement:** gateway: batched payouts on the provider's schedule. Off-ramp: per-conversion settlement to your named account, timed to your cut-offs.

## The confusion is understandable, and expensive

Both products "accept crypto and pay out fiat", so their marketing overlaps almost completely. The failure modes differ, though. A business that takes a $400,000 USD payment through a checkout gateway hits transaction caps, batch settlement delays and a compliance process never designed for that amount. A business that wires up an off-ramp relationship to sell $50 USD widgets has brought a trading desk to a checkout problem.

The market data shows why both exist: consumer checkout payments and business-to-business settlement are different flows, and BCG's 2026 analysis puts B2B at roughly 40% of real-economy stablecoin volume, the largest single segment. Checkout tools serve the consumer quarter; settlement providers serve the B2B flows, where individual payments are large and documentation matters.

## Which one is Sentvia?

Sentvia is a settlement provider, the off-ramp side: named accounts in four currencies, screening on every payment, quotes agreed before execution, and a trading team for large conversions. Businesses with genuine checkout volume sometimes run both: a gateway for the shop, a settlement provider for treasury, large invoices and anything a bank will scrutinise. The two coexist happily because they never compete for the same payment.

## Three questions that settle it

What does a typical payment look like: a cart, or an invoice? Who pays you: many anonymous consumers, or identified counterparties? And when the money lands, will your bank ask about it? Cart, consumers, no questions: gateway. Invoice, counterparties, yes: off-ramp. Mixed answers usually mean you need both, for different flows.

## Terms used on this page

- **Payment gateway:** checkout software that accepts many small payments and settles them in batches.
- **Off-ramp:** a service converting stablecoins into ordinary money in a bank account.
- **Batch settlement:** accumulating many payments and paying them out together on a schedule.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can a gateway handle a one-off large payment?

Usually poorly: transaction caps, batched payouts and consumer-grade compliance are the standard pain points. Large one-offs are exactly what settlement providers exist for.

### Is an off-ramp harder to set up than a gateway?

It is a different kind of setup: business verification rather than plugin installation. There is typically no code involved, and once verified, a conversion is an instruction rather than an integration.

### Which is cheaper?

They price different things: a gateway charges a published percentage on small payments; an off-ramp agrees a quote per conversion, where execution at size matters more than the headline rate. Comparing the two on percentage alone misleads in both directions.

### Do I need either if I already have a crypto exchange account?

An exchange serves traders, not treasuries: withdrawal limits, pooled accounts and support queues are the standard friction. The exchange-vs-desk question at corporate size is covered in the article linked below.
